Terms of Reference

1. London Food

London Food will work to develop activities and policies which support a sustainable food system in the capital. This includes:
  • Reducing the ecological impact of the capital's food sector
  • Supporting a vibrant food economy, especially through education and skills development and enhancing the status of food workers
  • Improving Londoners' health via the food they eat and reducing health inequalities
  • Improving access to food, particularly through planning and regeneration
  • Celebrating London's culinary cultural and ethnic diversity
  • Developing London's food security

2. Networking, Advocacy and joint action

Through activity and influence of individual members the Food Board will seek to encourage and secure the delivery of Healthy and Sustainable Food for London, The Mayor's food strategy.

3. Chair and membership

The Chair of London Food is appointed by the Mayor of London. Members of London Food are appointed for a period of two years by the Chair following discussions with the Mayor.

Members should be drawn from areas of expertise and experience of the London food sector which reflects the broad scope of the commission. London Food will be independent and high-level. Members will be expected to forward the aims and objectives of London Food, rather than any applicable personal or business interests.

Governance bodies (London Assembly, London Development Agency (LDA), Government Office London (GOL), Association of London Govenment (ALG), Department of Health and Sustain) can nominate substitutes to attend meetings: other members of London Food are appointed as individuals.

4. Meetings

London Food will meet twice a year.

5. Support staff and funding

The LDA in partnership with GoL will provide Secretariat support to London Food. The LDA and Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) currently provide operational funding to London Food.

6. Links to other bodies

London Food will maintain close links with other Mayoral Commissions, notably:

  • London Health Commission
  • London Sustainable Development Commission
  • Production Industries Commission
  • Skills Commission

London Food will maintain close working links with appropriate government departments and agencies, including the Government Office for London and the NHS.
