Eastway Cycle Circuit

Eastway is being temporarily relocated to allow for the construction of the Olympic Park. However; a key legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games will be major new facilities for cyclists, with the construction of an Olympic VeloPark. This will include a 1,500 seat velodrome and an international standard BMX track. After the Games, a cycle circuit and mountain bike track will be reinstated within the VeloPark, which will become the only integrated centre in the UK offering first class facilities for all the disciplines of cycling. It will be open to elite and grassroots cyclists alike.

Hog Hill/Eastway interim provision

The new cycling facility at Hog Hill, Hainault is programmed to open in Autumn 2007. to bridge the gap in provision between the closure of Eastway and the opening of Hog Hill the LDA undertook to investigate other reasonable options to assist with the continuation of cycle sport in the Summer 2007 season.

For the past few months British Cycling and the LDA have been working closely together to secure a package of interim measures for this period. We are happy to be able to announce that we are now in the final stages of discussions and expect to be able to confirm the details of the package in the next few weeks. This package will include club support, access to a number of facilities and central co-ordination for events and bookings. Further information will follow in early April.

Hog Hill - Planning Application

The planning application for the new cycle circuit at Hog Hill in the London borough of Redbridge was submitted on 3 November 2006. The Redbridge Planning Committee met on Thursday 1st February and passed a resolution to grant planning permission for the new circuit.

When will planning permission be granted?

A resolution to grant planning permission was passed on 1st February 2007.

When will work start on site?

The LDA will need to complete the statutory survey of Great Crested Newts at Hog Hill to obtain a licence for construction, before work can start on site. We expect to complete this survey by mid-May 2007 and to be on-site in June but this depends on how long it takes to be granted the licence.

When will the Hog Hill site open?

We anticipate completion of the facility in Autumn 2007.

What about between now and Autumn 2007?

The LDA has investigated the feasibility of using land within its control to cover this period. We believe that a site in the Royal Docks will be suitable as an interim measure. A planning application for an interim facility to be open over the Summer of 2007 was submitted to LB Newham in December and we expect a decision early this year. More detailed information will be made available in due course.

What is a happening to Lee Valley Youth Cycle Club?

In order for the Lee Valley Youth Cycle Club to continue its' operation, the LDA has agreed to cover the cost of opening Highams Park School on Saturdays until the interim facility at the Royal Docks is ready. Any queries on this shoud be sent directly to Lee Valley Youth Cycle Club.

What facilities will be provided in the Royal Docks?

A 1km closed road circuit along with support facilities such as changing rooms and toilets will be available.

When will this interim facility be open at the Royal Docks?

Planning permission will be necessary for this site, however; the LDA hopes to have this in place and the facility constructed  by March 2007.

How will the interim facility at the Royal Docks be managed?

The LDA and British Cycling (BC) have now reached an in principle agreement that BC will operate the interim cycling facility at Royal Docks, with the support of the LDA.

Both the LDA and BC are pleased to have reached an agreement that, subject to planning permission being received, will enable the Royal Docks facility to host a range of cycling events throughout the summer of 2007. Discussions on the detailed management of the facility are still ongoing between BC and the LDA, with BC keen to involve its regional representatives to ensure that this facility will be successful.

What about interim off-road provision?

LB Redbridge has agreed in principle to allow organised off-road events to take place in Hainault Country Park. We are now looking for users' input on programme requirements for the period from now until next Autumn. These requirements will then be used in discussions with the operators of the Country Park and to arrange the appropriate level of access. Please email your thoughts and what you think your requirements will be to eastway@lda.gov.uk and the LDA will be in touch soon.

When will Eastway finally close?

The Eastway cycle circuit was formally handed over on 13 November 2006. Contractors have now begun work on site and access is no longer possible to members of the public.
