An east London hospital site that is set to close could be turned into a community development of up to 750 homes. The London Development Agency (LDA) and the Housing Corporation are seeking expressions of interest from development partners for a major residential-led mixed use development on the site of St. Andrews Hospital, which is near the lower Lea Valley site of the London 2012 Olympic Park.
A key aim for the site, which is next to Bromley-by-Bow station, is to tackle the need for family housing in the area. The London Borough of Tower Hamlets is also a key stakeholder in this project.
Tony Winterbottom, London Development Agency Executive Director of Major Projects, Area and Sector Investment said: "The development of St Andrews site is an important part of our overall plan of the regeneration of the Lower Lea Valley. Together with the Housing Corporation, we are delivering an exemplar scheme showcasing sustainable urban design and high-quality architecture. The site is on the edge of the 2012 Olympic Park site and is strategically placed to act as a catalyst for much-needed new homes and other facilities in this part of London."
Fiona MacGregor, the Housing Corporation’s Assistant Director of Investment for the London Region commented: “The Housing Corporation is excited about working in partnership with the London Development Agency to maximise the affordable housing on this key east London development site, and looks forward to utilising the best practice learnt during this partnership on future development opportunities.”
Kathy Watkins, Chief Executive of Newham University Hospital NHS Trust, said: “The sale of the St Andrews hospital site is helping Newham University Hospital to fund world class health facilities. The Trust has been keen to ensure that the redevelopment of St Andrew’s contributes to health gain for the local population through the provision of affordable housing as part of the re-generation of the Lower Lea Valley.”
The comprehensive regeneration of the three hectare site will create a thriving and sustainable mixed use development providing a substantial amount of new homes together with Primary Care Trust accommodation and other complementary uses.
