Building better places in London

We promote London's regeneration – designing and investing in major projects and ensuring new developments make the city a better place

In 2010/11, we will be:

  • investing in London’s housing and public spaces
  • attracting investment from both the private and public sector
  • building housing for Londoners
  • creating and improving public spaces
  • working in partnership with Transport for London, London’s boroughs and private-sector developers.

The development of London's places and infrastructure is a key factor in improving the quality of life for Londoners and the economic competitiveness and sustainable growth of the capital.

The London Development Agency (LDA) plays a vital, region-wide role in helping to shape the capital’s design, development and environment. We work with partners to ensure that new developments are appropriate, high-quality, sustainable and deliver opportunities that benefit all of London’s communities.

We support the regeneration of London’s built environment and public spaces by unlocking land assets and improving the physical environment to transform areas of deprivation and opportunity and promoting the development of new homes, jobs, services and spaces.

How we work

We invest where there is a clear market failure. We focus on area-based projects that bring physical and socio-economic transformation. The LDA influences and improves change that is already happening – for example, by encouraging better design, infrastructure, site assembly and accessibility. We also kick-start new areas of change through investment plans and masterplanning.

Our work is guided by the Mayor's London Plan, which:

  • maps out an infrastructure for future development

  • supports the development of an adequate supply of commercial property and affordable housing

  • promotes a healthy, sustainable and high-quality urban environment.

By combining our work on infrastructure, climate change, environment, housing and development, we are taking a co-ordinated approach that maximises the opportunities for growth.  we can greatly enhance our contribution to London’s regeneration and economic well-being by linking employment initiatives to new construction schemes. This means local people benefit from large-scale, physical changes to their neighbourhoods, town centres, employment locations, transport hubs and public space.

Our activities

The LDA's work in this area includes:

The New Urban Agenda

The New Urban Agenda sets our approach to housing, infrastructure, place-making and climate change. It outlines a framework for meeting the current challenges as well as preparing London for the future.

Transport

By taking a planned approach, we will make the most of opportunities for sustainable economic growth around new transport investment such as Crossrail and beyond through High Speed Rail (HS2).

Development

We will develop or distribute our landholdings strategically, using them as catalysts for local regeneration in growth areas, which include the Thames Gateway, London Plan Opportunity Areas, key employment location, high streets and key town centres.  We have created a first in the London Brownfield Online database for the all those involved in the development sector

Housing

The LDA is working closely with partners such as the Housing and Communities Agency (HCA) to increase the availability of well-designed, sustainable and affordable homes across the capital.  We are working toward a new London Housing Company to promote and increase the development of new homes.

Public space

Through programmes such as the Mayor's Great Spaces initiative, we will improve our public spaces, using them as a focus for other regeneration programmes to bring about a positive impact on people’s lives and make London a more attractive city.

Environment and climate change

The LDA plays a pivotal role in driving the Mayor's challenge to reduce the capital's CO2 emissions by 60% and make London a low-carbon city. By improving our green infrastructure, we will address climate change and make London a better place in which to live and work.

2012 Games

The LDA has been working to ensure that the legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games contributes to London's long-term prosperity and success.
