Sustainable Communities in North London

To support London's growing population, six boroughs in North London have been identified for growth, which are capable of exciting regeneration and the development of new communities. Together they can provide thousands of new homes and jobs.

The provision of new homes has failed to keep pace with the numbers of new households. The Sustainable Communities Plan (published February 2003) was clear that we needed to take radical action.

The current housing pressures in London, the south east and other regional hotspots are acute and ambitious solutions are required if we are to avoid the urban sprawl of the past.

Through the Sustainable Communities Plan the LSCP was designated as a growth area by the Communities and Local Government (formerly the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister).

These boroughs form the London end of the London Stansted Cambridge Peterborough (LSCP) Growth Area.

The geography of the LSCP growth area extends from Hackney in central London, along the full extent of the Lee Valley and out to Cambridge, Stansted Airport and ultimately to Peterborough.

North London is projected to deliver more than 20% of London's housing growth over the next decade, 57850 homes.

Investment Framework

The London Development Agency (LDA) is leading on a Development and Investment Framework (NLDIF) for the North London part of the London Stansted-Peterborough-Cambridge Growth Area.

The Framework is jointly funded by Communities and Local Government (CLG) and its partners include the sub-regional partnership, Housing Corporation and the Greater London Authority (GLA) Group.

The LDA has started a process for the six boroughs in north London to detail the development opportunities and challenges in an area that is home to a fifth of London's population.
